MWC 2013 Days 2 and 3 – 50 Billion Connections Including Your Coffee Maker

After the flurry of mobile device announcements on Day 1 of this year’s Mobile World Congress, Days 2 and 3 provided time to see what else is going on. Various presentations and exhibits at this year’s show are continuing an increasing interest in Machine-to-Machine (M2M) applications that started last year. Automotive industry exhibits and conference sessions are drawing big crowds, as are other telematics and M2M applications featured in various sessions and in MWC and GSMA-sponsored pavilions. According Read more [...]

MWC 2013 Day 1 – As Expected, Mobile Devices Rule the Opening Day

Everyone’s first challenge at this year’s Mobile World Congress is to learn their way around the huge new digs at Fira Gran Via. As many of you remember, it wasn’t long ago (2006) that MWC moved from Cannes to Barcelona and took up residence in the 115,000 m2 (plus 50,000 m2 outdoor space) Fira de Barcelona (Montjuic). The Gran Via has 240,00 m2 spread over 8 pavilions and everyone has to learn where the Conference Village, App Planet and other MWC staples were located. The obvious benefit Read more [...]

The New Mobile Horizon – Mobile World Congress 2013

Every year at this time the build-up to the largest mobile technology show, Mobile World Congress (MWC), begins in earnest. Vendors start their product introduction cycles and journalists start publishing stories about what you can expect at MWC. As you might expect, much of the early publicity is about the new smartphones, tablets and other mobile technology the will be introduced.  A good example highlighting the expected announcements from Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung and HTC can be found at CNET’s Read more [...]
4G World

4G Is A Big Topic and Next Week’s 4G World Is A Big Show!

Technically, 4G refers to an ITU-R requirements specification called IMT-Advanced (International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced). The document specifies the peak speed requirements for high mobility communications (such as from cars and trains) at 100Mbits/s and 1Gbits/s for low mobility communications. However, throughout the telecommunications industry, 4G simply represents the 4th generation of mobile phone and mobile communications technology – i.e. the stuff that came after 3G!  Basically, Read more [...]

President Clinton To Keynote CTIA Wireless 2012

CTIA Wireless 2012, with its theme of “All Things Mobile”, is being held May 8-10 in New Orleans at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. In addition to the keynote speeches by mobile industry CEOs, former U.S. President Bill Clinton will speaking at this year’s event – should be very interesting. Topics of interest include The Path to 4G and the Future of Tablets.  I also expect the sessions on monetization, mobile payments and maximizing ROI to be crowded (just like last year).

MWC 2012 – Is The Mobile Infrastructure Falling Behind?

According to many of the executives speaking at Mobile World Congress 2012, the number one challenge today is to build out the mobile infrastructure to support the explosion in mobile data traffic. Many feel that the current infrastructure is barely able to provide adequate service for current use and with the deployment of new applications such as mobile payments, data usage will explode. The most recent Visual Networking Index Forecast from Cisco predicts that worldwide mobile data traffic will Read more [...]

Day 1 At MWC 2012

In a late January post, I tried to predict what some of the big announcements would be at Mobile World Congress (MWC).  Now that the Day 1 hoopla is over, let’s see how I faired as your fearless prognosticator. As predicted, Nokia lead off with three (the Asha 202, 203 and 302) new S40 devices (S40 is Nokia’s Series 40 software platform and UI) and a new Nokia Life SMS-based service that provides ‘life-enhancing information’ on a subscription basis. They also announced Nokia Traffic for Read more [...]

New Hot Topics To Learn About at MWC 2012

In my last post, I highlighted some of the announcements expected at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2012. The hot topics you will probably see a great deal of media coverage about will stem from all the smartphone, tablet, LTE and cloud computing announcements expected at the show. These topics were all the rage at CES 2012 in Las Vegas and the volume should increase at MWC. As a technology marketing person (and a bit of a geek myself), I devour the product and company news stories but I am Read more [...]

MWC 2012 – Some Things To Watch For

With CES 2012 over, focus shifts to the next of the ‘big 3 mobile computing events’ - Mobile World Congress 2012, held in Barcelona February 27 through March 1.  While CES covers the wide range of gadgets that we will be buying in 2012, MWC dives more deeply into mobile computing topics including devices, content, applications, network equipment, mobile operator monitization strategies, regulation, vertical markets such as healthcare and financial services, network technology evolution and much, Read more [...]
